Looking for something to do this long weekend? Look no further as Sensational Selwyn has something on offer to suit everyone!

Here’s our favourite spots to visit and activities to do this long weekend…

Take the scenic route

Grab the family, pack a picnic and take a drive to Lakeside Domain. On the edge of Lake Ellesmere this is one of the best spots in Selwyn to find a huge range of native birds, go camping (no charge), fishing, walking, water skiing, kayaking or boating!

It’s also an amazing location for photography both during the day and at night. Did you know Selwyn is the perfect place to view the southern lights (aurora australis)? Lake Ellesmere in particular is great due to it’s location south of Christchurch City, with very little light pollution.

If you get a great shot, we’d love to see it! Share it with us on Instagram or Facebook #sensationalselwyn

Buy fresh, buy local

Every Saturday you can visit one of three Farmer’s Markets either in West Melton, Lincoln or Darfield.

Grab your fresh vegetables for the weekend, some Italian cheese to take to that BBQ or even a personalised bunch of flowers, put together right in front of your eyes at the West Melton Market.

In Lincoln you can pick up a bottle of locally made wine, the most delicious cookies or for an easy tea – some pork pies and vegetable pasties.

In Darfield you can try locally grown and produced hazelnuts, some fresh home baking (and pretend you made it!) plus they have your long weekend gardening sorted with a great range of plants available.

Each of these towns also have fantastic cafes and country shopping, plan to spend a few hour checking it all out!

Go walking

Just an hour and a half from Christchurch you will find Lake Coleridge Village. The Village boasts 10 walking tracks ranging from a 30 minute easy stroll to back country, full day tramps.

Two of our picks are:

Around the Village

This is a great walk starting at the post office, taking in all the points of interest throughout the Lake Coleridge Village.

Peak Hill

If you are feeling a little bit more energetic but love being rewarded with incredible views – this is your track.

Finish your walking adventures with a coffee or cold drink at Terrace Downs just down the road.

Take a ‘short drive’

Sprinkled across Selwyn you will find eight different golf courses. Wether you are a complete beginner or a pro, grab your clubs (or hire some) and head out onto the fairway.

The Hororata Golf Course (Actually located in Glentunnel!) is one of our fav’s as it’s perfect for all abilities. The course has a small river through the middle, some elevated tee shots but wide open fairways.

For a quick game, try the Lincoln Golf Course. You can get around the nine hole course in roughly 2.5 hours.

Some of the best greens in Canterbury can be found at the little known; Greendale Golf Course but look out for the famous 17th, a blind par three with threatening out of bounds and a terraced approach.

Get creative

With three main galleries and multiple smaller galleries across Selwyn, let the artist in you explore.

One of our picks is Down by the Liffey Gallery in Lincoln. Every month they host new exhibitions by local and emerging artists including a huge array of visual art.

Galleries also have great gift ideas for special occasions or just because! – Crafts, jewellery, prints, sculptures, and more!
