The best hospitality can be found in the country!
Thankfully we are just down the road from Christchurch, so come on out to experience some good, old fashioned (but with a modern twist) country cafes and stores. Here’s our favourite spots…
The Lincoln Pantry
The locals claim this is the place to go for the best coffee in Lincoln, the owners claim this is the best place to go to buy a great range of locally made cheeses – check it out and decide for yourself! (We reckon they are both pretty bang on).
The store itself is super neat, fitted out with a variety of re-purposed materials including items out of earthquake damaged buildings in Christchurch and pallets made into shelving. Purchases of a huge range of organic and ethically sourced edible delights produced both locally and internationally are packaged into paper bags or cardboard boxes.
These guys specialise in hampers – there is a whole wall dedicated to to them! You can pick any size, any theme – even any products you want to be included
For a takeaway treat, grab a raw, gluten or dairy free snack from their cabinet or one of their legendary sandwiches. If you haven’t checked out The Lincoln Pantry yet, you really are missing out!
Little River Cafe Store
With a seriously impressive food cabinet as well as menu items, the Little River Cafe and Store is a must stop on your journey to or from Akaroa.
Here you’ll find organic coffee, food made using local produce and even a general store with grocery items, fruit and veg and artisan breads. Try the berry sundaes on a hot Summer’s day – you won’t regret it!
After lunch, take home a gift for a friend (or yourself) from the huge range of locally made giftware and walk through to the amazing art gallery – all located in the same building.
The Store @ Tai Tapu
Known for their milkshakes and choc-dipped gourmet ice creams, arrange to meet your bestie at The Store @ Tai Tapu.
The gift store has an ever-changing array of great nic-nacs including jewellery, hand creams, decorative homeware and gorgeous smelling candles – the perfect place to browse after enjoying the range of delights on offer in the cafe.
Sit outside on a warm Spring day under the stunning blossom canopy with a coffee and cake, or high tea! (order 24 hours in advance). Breakfast is amazing, the rhubarb punch is delicious and just quietly… the cheese rolls are some of the best we have tasted!
The Dunsandel Store is a fantastic place to stop on your journey south from Christchurch. They have all sorts of treats including the interesting lollycake cheesecake slice! The bakers at the Dunsandel Store struggle to keep up with the demand for their giant chocolate chip cookies and we are lucky enough to share the recipe with you:
250g soft butter
1 cup Caster sugar
1 cup soft brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence
3 1/2 cups self raising flour
1 cup chocolate chips
Creamed softened butter, both sugars and vanilla essence. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Mix in the flour until combined then lightly stir in the chocolate chips. Roll the mixture into eight even balls, place on a greased tray and press down slightly. Leave plenty of space between the cookies. Fan bake at 160 degrees Celcius until golden and the cookies slide on the tray.
There is a reason why you MUST book to be able to secure a table here. Set amongst 27 acres of berry fields, the iconic Raspberry cafe are open for brunch, lunch and coffee & cake seven days a week during Summer and Wednesday – Sunday during Autumn, Winter and Spring. They serve a variety of amazing food including daily baking, a kids menu, cabinet food and a full menu. They provide great options for vegetarians, dairy, gluten and wheat free and they are licensed to serve wine and beer as well.
But the real jewel in their crown is the extra special treats available:
- Pick your own berries November to April
- Real fruit sundae’s
Check out their Facebook Page every Friday for the weekly announcement of donut flavours. But be quick, because come Saturday morning, they are all snapped up very quickly!
